Aṣṭasāhasrikāprajñāpāramitāsūtram, ch. I

| oṃ namo bhagavatyai āryaprajñāpāramitāyai |

 

evaṃ mayā śrutam | ekasmin samaye bhagavān rājagṛhe viharati sma gṛdhakūṭe parvate mahatā bhikṣusaṃghena sārdham ardhatrayodaśabhir bhikṣuśataiḥ, sarvair arhadbhiḥ kṣīṇāsravair niḥkleśair vaśībhūtaiḥ suvimuktacittaiḥ suvimuktaprajñair ājāneyair mahānāgaiḥ kṛtakṛtyai kṛtakaraṇīyair apahṛtabhārair anuprāptasvakārthaiḥ parikṣīṇabhavasaṃyojanaiḥ samyagājñāsuvimucittaiḥ sarvacetovaśiparamapāramiprāptaikaṃ pudgalaṃ sthāpayitvā yad uta āyuṣmantam ānandam ||

tatra khalu bhagavān ayuṣmantaṃ subhūtiṃ sthaviram āmantrayate sma – pratibhātu te subhūte bodhisatvānāṃ mahāsatvānāṃ prajñāpāramitām ārabhya yathā bodhisatvā mahāsatvāḥ prajñāpāramitāṃ niryāyur iti ||

atha khalv āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasyaitad abhavat – kim ayam āyuṣmān subhūtiḥ sthavira ātmīyena svakena prajñapratibhāna – balādhānena svakena prajñāpratibhānabalādhiṣṭhānena bodhisatvānāṃ mahāsatvānāṃ prajñāpāramitām upadekṣyati utāho buddhānubhāveneti?

atha khalv āyuṣmān subhūtir buddhānubhāvena āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasya imam evaṃ rūpaṃ cetasaiva cetaḥ – parivitarkamājñāya āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputram etad avocat – yat kiṃcid āyuṣmān śāriputra bhagavataḥ śrāvakā bhāṣante deśayanti upadiśanti udīrayanti prakāśayanti saṃprakāśayanti, sa sarvastathāgatasya puruṣakāro veditavyaḥ | tatkasya hetoḥ? yo hi tathāgatena dharmo deśitaḥ, tatra dharmadeśanāyāṃ śikṣamāṇāste tāṃ dharmatāṃ sākṣātkurvanti dhārayanti, tāṃ dharmatāṃ sākṣātkṛtya dhārayitvā yadyad eva bhāṣante, yadyad eva deśayanti, yadyad eva upadiśanti, yadyad evodīrayanti, yadyad eva prakāśayanti, yadyad eva saṃprakāśayanti, sarvaṃ taddharmatayā aviruddham | tathāgatadharmadeśanāyā eva āyuṣman śāriputra eṣa niṣyandaḥ, yat te kulaputrā upadiśantastāṃ dharmatāṃ dharmatayā na virodhayanti ||

atha khalv āyuṣmān subhūtir buddhānubhāvena bhagavantam etad avocat – yad bhagavān eva māha – pratibhātu te subhūte bodhisatvānāṃ mahāsatvānāṃ prajñāpāramitām ārabhya yathā bodhisatvā mahāsatvāḥ prajñāpāramitāṃ niryāyur iti | bodhisatvo bodhisatva iti yad idaṃ bhagavann ucyate, katasyaitad bhagavan dharmasyādhivacanaṃ yad uta bodhisatva iti? nāhaṃ bhagavaṃs taṃ dharmaṃ samanupaśyāmi yad uta bodhisatva iti | tam apy aṃha bhagavan dharmaṃ na samanupaśyati yad uta prajñāpāramitā nāma | so ’haṃ bhagavān bodhisatvaṃ vā bodhisatvadharmaṃ vā avindan anupalabhamāno ’samanupaśyan, prajñāpāramitāmapyavindan anupalabhamāno ’samanupaśyan katamaṃ bodhisatvaṃ katasyāṃ prajñāpāramitāyām avavadiṣyāmi anuśāsiṣyāmi? api tu khalu punar bhagavan saced evaṃ bhāṣyamāṇe deśyamāne upadiśyamāne bodhisatvasya cittaṃ nāvalīyate na saṃlīyate na viṣīdati na viṣādam āpadyate, nāsya vipṛṣṭhībhavati mānasam, na bhagnapṛṣṭhībhavati, notrasyati na saṃtrasyati na saṃtrāsamāpadyate, eṣa eva bodhisatvo mahāsatvaḥ prajñāpāramitāyām anuśāsanīyaḥ | eṣaivāsya bodhisatvasya mahāsatvasya prajñāpāramitā veditavyā | eṣo ’vavādaḥ prajñāpāramitāyām | saced evaṃ tiṣṭhati, eṣaivāsyāvavādānuśāsanī ||

punar aparaṃ bhagavan bodhisatvena mahāsatvena prajñāpāramitāyāṃ caratā prajñāpāramitāyāṃ bhāvayatā evaṃ śikṣitavyaṃ yathā asau śikṣyamāṇas tenāpi bodhicittena na manyeta | tatkasya hetoḥ? tathā hi – tañ cittam acittam prakṛtiś cittasya prabhāsvarā ||

atha khalv āyuṣmān śāriputra āyuṣmantaṃ subhūtim etad avocat – kiṃ punar āyuṣman subhūte asti tañ cittaṃ yañ cittam acittam? evam ukte āyuṣmān subhūtir āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputram etad avocat – kiṃ punar āyuṣmān śāriputra yā acittatā, tatra acittatāyām astitā vā nāstitā vā vidyate vā upalacyate vā? śāriputra āha – na hy etad āyuṣmān subhūte | subhūtir āha – saced āyuṣman śāriputra tatra acittatāyām astitā vā nāstitā vā na vidyate vā nopalabhyate vā, api nu te yukta eṣa paryanuyogo bhavati yad āyuṣmān śāriputra evam āha – asti tañ cittaṃ yañ cittam acittam iti? evam ukte āyuṣmān śāriputra āyuṣmantaṃ subhūtim etad avocat – kā punar eṣā āyuṣman subhūte acittatā? subhūtir āha – avikārā āyuṣman śāriputra avikalpā acittatā ||

atha khalv āyuṣmān śāriputra āyuṣmate subhūtaye sādhukāram adāt – sādhu sādhv āyuṣman subhūte | yathāpi nāma tvaṃ bhagavatā araṇāvihāriṇām agratāyāṃ nirdiṣṭo nirdiśasi | ataś ca bodhisatvo mahāsatvo ’vinivartanīyo ’nuttarāyā samyakasaṃbodher upapīkṣitavyaḥ, avirahitaśva ca bodhisatvo mahāsatvaḥ prajñāpāramitāyā veditavyaḥ | śrāvakabhūmāv api śikṣitukāmena iyam eva prajñāpāramitā śrotavyā udgrahītavyā dhārayitavyā vācayitavyā paryavāptavyā pravartayitavyā | ihaiva prajñāpāramitāyāṃ śikṣitavyaṃ yogam āpattavyam | pratyekabuddhabhūmāv api śikṣitukāmena iyam eva prajñāpāramitā śrotavyā udgrahītavyā dhārayitavyā vācayitavyā paryavāptavyā pravartayitavyā | ihaiva prajñāpāramitāyāṃ śikṣitavyaṃ yogam āpattavyam | bodhisatvabhūmāv api śikṣitukāmena iyam eva prajñāpāramitā śrotavyā udgrahītavyā dhārayitavyā vācayitavyā paryavāptavyā pravartayitavyā | ihaiva prajñāpāramitāyām upāyakauśalyasam anvāgatena sarvabodhisatvadharmasamudāgamāya yogaḥ karaṇīyaḥ | tatkasya hetoḥ? ihaiva hi prajñāpāramitāyāṃ vistareṇa sarvabodhisatvadharmo upadiṣṭāḥ, yatra bodhisatvena mahāsatvena śikṣitavyaṃ yogam āpattavyam | anuttarāyām api samyaksaṃbodhau śikṣitukāmena iyam eva prajñāpāramitā śrotavyā udgrahītavyā dhārayitavyā vācayitavyā paryavāptavyā pravartayitavyā | ihaiva prajñāpāramitāyām upāyakauśalyasamanvāgatena sarvabuddhadharmasamudāgamāya yogaḥ karaṇīyaḥ | tatkasya hetoḥ? ihaiva hi prajñāpāramitāyāṃ vistareṇa sarvabuddhadharmā upadiṣṭāḥ, yatra bodhisatvena mahāsatvena śikṣitavyaṃ yogam āpattavyam ||

atha khalv āyuṣmān subhūtir bhagavantam etad avocat – yo ’haṃ bhagavan etad eva bodhisatvanāmadheyaṃ na vedmi nopalabhe na samanupaśyāmi | prajñāpāramitām api na vedmi nopalabhe na samanupaśyāmi | so ’haṃ bhagavan etad eva bodhisatvanāmadheyam avindan anupalabhamāno ’samanupaśyan prajñāpāramitām api avindan anupalabhamāno ’samanupaśyan katamaṃ bodhisatvaṃ katamasyāṃ prajñāpāramitāyām avavadiṣyāmi anuśāsiṣyāmi? etad eva bhagavan kaukṛtyaṃ syāt, yo ’haṃ vastv avindan anupalabhamāno ’samanupaśyan nāmadheyamātreṇa āyavyayaṃ kuryuṃ yad uta bodhisatva iti | api tu khalu punar bhagavaṃs tad api nāmadheyaṃ na sthitaṃ nāsthitaṃ na viṣṭhitaṃ nāviṣṭhitam | tatkasya hetoḥ? avidyamānatvena tasya nāmadheyasya | evaṃ tan nāmadheyaṃ na sthitaṃ nāsthitaṃ na viṣṭhitaṃ nāviṣṭhitam | saced bodhisatvasya mahāsatvasya evaṃ gambhīrāyāṃ prajñāpāramitāyāṃ bhāṣyamāṇāyāṃ deśyamānāyām upadiśyamānāyāṃ cittaṃ nāvalīyate na saṃlīyate na viṣīdati na viṣādam āpadyate, nāsya vipṛṣṭhībhavati mānasam, na bhagnapṛṣṭhībhavati, notrasyati na saṃtrasyati na saṃtrāsam āpadyate | adhimucyate ’dhyāśayena avirahito bodhisatvo mahāsatvaḥ prajñāpāramitāyā veditavyaḥ, sthito ’vinivartanīyāyāṃ bodhisatvabhūmau, susthito ’sthānayogena | punar aparaṃ bhagavan bodhisatvena mahāsatvena prajñāpāramitāyāṃ caratā prajñāpāramitāṃ bhāvayatā na rūpe sthātavyaṃ na vedanāyāṃ na saṃjñāyāṃ na saṃskāreṣu, na vijñāne sthātavyam | tatkasya hetoḥ? saced rūpe tiṣṭhati, rūpābhisaṃskāre carati, na carati prajñāpāramitāyām | evaṃ saced vedanāyāṃ saṃjñāyāṃ saṃskāreṣu | saced vijñāne tiṣṭhati, vijñānābhisaṃskāre carati, na carati prajñāpāramitāyām | tatkasya hetoḥ? na hi abhisaṃskāre caran prajñāpāramitāṃ parigṛhṇāti, nāpi prajñāpāramitāyāṃ yogam āpadyate, nāpi prajñāpāramitāṃ paripūrayate | aparipūrayamāṇaḥ prajñāpāramitāṃ na niryāsyati sarvajñatāyām aparigṛhītaṃ parigṛhṇan | tatkasya hetoḥ? rūpa hi aparigṛhītaṃ prajñāpāramitāyām | evaṃ vedanā saṃjñā saṃskārāḥ | vijñānaṃ hi aparigṛhītaṃ prajñāpāramitāyām | yaś ca rūpasyāparigrahaḥ, na tadrūpam | evaṃ yo vedanāyāḥ saṃjñāyāḥ saṃskārāṇām | yo vijñānasyāparigrahaḥ, na tadvijñānam | sāpi prajñāpāramitā aparigṛhītā | evaṃ hy atra bodhisatvena mahāsatvena prajñāpāramatriyāṃ caritavyam | ayaṃ ca bodhisatvasya mahātvasya sarvadharmaparigṛhīto nāma samādhir vipulaḥ puraskṛtaḥ apramāṇaniyato ’sādhāraṇaḥ | sarvaśrāvakapratyekabuddhaiḥ sāpi sarvajñatā aparigṛhītā, na hi nimittato grahītavyā | sacen nimittato grahītavyā abhaviṣyat, na ceha śreṇikaḥ parivrājakaḥ śraddhām alapsyata | tatra hi śreṇikaḥ parivrājakaḥ sarvajñajñāne adhimucya śraddhānusārī prādeśikena jñānenāvatīrṇaḥ | so ’vatīrya na rūpaṃ parigṛhṇīte | evaṃ na vedanāṃ na saṃjñāṃ na saṃskārān | na vijñānaṃ parigṛhṇīte | nāpi tatra prītisukhena taj jñānaṃ samanupaśyati | nādhyātmaṃ rūpasya taj jñānaṃ samanupaśyati | na bahirdhu rūpasya taj jñānaṃ samanupaśyati | nādhyātmabahirdhā rūpasya taj jñānaṃ samanupaśyati | nāpyanyatra rūpāt taj jñānaṃ samanupaśyati | evaṃ nādhyātmaṃ vedanāyāḥ saṃjñāyāḥ saṃskārāṇām | nādhyātmaṃ vijñānasya taj jñānaṃ samanupaśyati | na bahirdhu vijñānasya taj jñānaṃ samanupaśyati | nādhyātmabahirdhā vijñānasya taj jñānaṃ samanupaśyati | nāpy anyatra vijñānāt taj jñānaṃ samanupaśyati | atra padaparyāye śreṇikaḥ parivrājako ’dhimuktaḥ | so ’tra sarvatra śraddhānusārī sarvajñajñāne dharmatāṃ pramāṇīkṛtya evam adhimukta iti | tena na kaścid dharmaḥ parigṛhītaḥ | nāpi sa kaścid dharmo ya upalabdhaḥ, yaṃ gṛhṇīyān muñced vā | sa nirvāṇam api na manyate | iyam api bhagavan bodhisatvasya mahāsatvasya prajñāpāramitā veditavyā yad rūpaṃ na parigṛhṇīte | evaṃ yad vedanāṃ saṃjñāṃ saṃskārān | yad vijñānaṃ na parigṛhṇīte | na cāntarā parinirvāti, aparipūṇair daśabhis tathāgatabalaiś caturbhis tathāgatavaiśādyair aṣṭādaśabhiś ca āveṇikair buddhadharmaiḥ | tasmād iyam api bhagavan bodhisatvasya mahāsatvasya prajñāpāramitā veditavyā ||

punar aparaṃ bhagavan bodhisatvena mahāsatvena prajñāpāramitāyāṃ caratā prajñāpāramitāṃ bhāvayatā evam upaparīkṣitavyam evam upanidhyātavyam – katamaiṣā prajñāpāramitā? kasya caiṣā prajñāpāramitā? kiṃ yo dharmo na vidyate nopalabhyate, sā prajñāpāramiteti? saced evam upaparīkṣamāṇaḥ evam upanidhyāyan nāvalīyate na saṃlīyate na viṣīdati na viṣādam āpadyate, nāsya vipṛṣṭhībhavati mānasam, na bhagnapṛṣṭhībhavati, notrasyati na saṃtrasyati na saṃtrāsam āpadyate, avirahito bodhisatvo mahāsatvaḥ prajñāpāramitayā veditavyaḥ ||

atha khalv āyuṣmān śāriputra āyuṣmantaṃ subhūtim etad avocat – kiṃ kāraṇam āyuṣman subhūte aviraheto bodhisatvo mahāsatvaḥ prajñāpāramitayā veditavyaḥ? yadā rūpam eva virahitaṃ rūpasvabhāvena, evaṃ yadā vedanaiva saṃjñaiva saṃskārā eva, yadā vijñānam eva virahitaṃ vijñānasvabhāvena, yadā prajñāpāramitaiva virahitā prajñāpāramitāsvabhāvena, yadā sarvajñataiva virahitā sarvajñatāsvabhāvena ||

evam ukte āyuṣmān subhūtir āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputram etad avocat – evam etad āyuṣman śāriputra, evam etat | rūpam evāyuṣman śāriputra virahitaṃ rūpasvabhāvena | evaṃ vedanaiva saṃjñaiva saṃskārā eva | vijñānam evāyuṣman śāriputra virahitaṃ vijñānasvabhāvena | prajñāpāramitaiva āyuṣman śāriputra virahitā prajñāpāramitāsvabhāvena | sarvajñataiva āyuṣman śāriputra virahitā sarvajñatāsvabhāvena | prajñāpāramitālakṣaṇenāpi prajñāpāramitā virahitā | lakṣaṇasvabhāvenāpi lakṣaṇaṃ virāhitam | lakṣyasvabhāvenāpi lakṣyaṃ virahitam | svabhāvalakṣaṇenāpi svabhāvo virahitaḥ ||

evam ukte āyuṣmān śāriputra āyuṣmantaṃ subhūtim etad avocat – kiṃ punar āyuṣman subhūte yo bodhisatvo mahāsatvo ’tra śikṣiṣyate, sa niryesyati sarvajñatāyām? āyuṣmān subhūtir āha – evam etad āyuṣmān śāriputra, evam etat | yo bodhisatvo mahāsatvo ’tra śikṣiṣyate, sa niryesyati sarvajñatāyām | tatkasya hetoḥ? ajātā hy anirjātā hy āyuṣman śāriputra sarvadharmāḥ | evaṃ carata āyuṣman śāriputra bodhisatvasya mahāsatvasya sarvajñatā āsannībhavati | yathā yathā sarvajñatā āsannībhavati, tathā tathā satvaparipācanāya kāyacittapariśuddhiḥ buddhakṣetraśuddhiḥ | buddhaiś ca samavadhānaṃ bhavati | evaṃ ca punar āyuṣman śāriputra bodhisatvo mahāsatvaḥ prajñāpāramitāyāṃ caran sarvajñatāyā āsannībhavati ||

punar aparam āyuṣmān subhūtir bodhisatvaṃ mahāsatvam ārabhyaivam āha – saced rūpe carati, nimitte carati | saced rūpanimitte carati, nimitte carati | saced rūpaṃ nimittamiti carati, nimitte carati | sa ced rūpasyotpāde carati, nimitte carati | saced rūpasya nirodhe carati, nimitte carati | saced rūpasya vināśe carati, nimitte carati | saced rūpaṃ śūnyam iti carati, nimitte carati | ahaṃ carāmīti carati, nimitte carati | ahaṃ bodhisatva iti carati, nimitte carati | ahaṃ bodhisatva iti hy upalambha eva sa carati | evaṃ saced vedanāyāṃ saṃjñāyāṃ saṃskāreṣu | saced vijñāne carati, nimitte carati | saced vijñānanimitte carati, nimitte carati | saced vijñānaṃ nimittamiti carati, nimitte carati | saced vijñānasyotpāde carati, nimitte carati | saced vijñānasya nirodhe carati, nimitte carati | saced vijñānasya vināśe carati, nimitte carati | saced vijñānaṃ śūnyam iti carati, nimitte carati | ahaṃ carāmīti carati, nimitte carati | ahaṃ bodhisatva iti carati, nimitte carati | ahaṃ bodhisatva iti hy upalambha eva sa carati | sacet punar asyaivaṃ bhavati – ya evaṃ carati, sa prajñāpāramitāyāṃ carati, sa prajñāpāramitāṃ bhāvayatīti, nimitta eva sa carati | ayaṃ bodhisatvo ’nupāyakuśalo veditavyaḥ ||

atha khalv āyuṣmān śāriputra āyuṣmantaṃ subhūtim etad avocat – kathaṃ punar āyuṣman subhūte caran bodhisatvo mahāsatvaś carati prajñāpāramitāyām? evam ukte āyuṣmān subhūtir āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputram etad avocat – saced āyuṣman śāriputra bodhisatvo mahāsatvo na rūpe carati, na rūpanimitte carati, na rūpaṃ nimittam iti carati, na rūpasyotpāde carati, na rūpasya nirodhe carati, na rūpasya vināśe carati, na rūpaṃ śūnyam iti carati, nāhaṃ carāmīti carati, nāhaṃ bodhisatva iti carati | evaṃ sacen na vedanāyāṃ na saṃjñāyāṃ na saṃskāreṣu | sacen na vijñāne carati, na vijñānanimitte carati, na vijñānaṃ nimittam iti carati, na vijñānasyotpāde carati, na vijñānasya nirodhe carati, na vijñānasya vināśe carati, na vijñānaṃ śūnyam iti carati, nāhaṃ carāmīti carati, nāhaṃ bodhisatva iti carati | sacet punar nāsyaivaṃ bhavati – ya evaṃ carati, sa prajñāpāramitāyāṃ carati, sa prajñāpāramitāṃ bhāvayatīti | evaṃ caran bodhisatvo mahāsatvaś carati prajñāpāramitāyām | sa hi caraṃś carāmīti nopaiti, na carāmīti nopaiti, carāmi ca na carāmi ceti nopaiti, naiva carāmi na na carāmīti nopaiti, cariṣyāmīti naupaiti, na cariṣyāmīti nopaiti, cariṣyāmi ca na cariṣyāmi ceti nopaiti, naiva cariṣyāmi na cariṣyāmīti nopaiti | tatkasya hetor nopaiti? sarvadharmo hy anupagatā anupattāḥ | ayam ucyate sarvadharmenupādāno nāma samādhir bodhisatvasya mahāsatvasya, vipulaḥ puraskṛto ’pramāṇaniyato ’sādhāraṇaḥ sarvaśrāvakapratyekabuddhaiḥ | anenaiva samādhinā viharan bodhisatvo mahāsatvaḥ kṣipram anuttarāṃ samyaksaṃbodhim abhisaṃbudhyate ||

buddhānubhāvena āyuṣmān subhūtiḥ sthavira evam āha – vyākṛto ’yaṃ bhagavan bodhisatvo mahāsatvaḥ pūrvakais tathāgatair arhadbhiḥ samyakasaṃbuddhair anuttarāyāṃ samyakasaṃbodhau, yo ’nena samādhinā viharati | sa tam api samādhiṃ na samanupaśyati, na ca tena samādhinā manyate – ahaṃ samāhitaḥ, ahaṃ samādhi samāpatsye, ahaṃ samādhi samāpadye, ahaṃ samādhisamāpannaḥ, iti, evaṃ tasya sarveṇa sarvaṃ sarvathā sarvaṃ na saṃvidyate ||

evam ukte āyuṣmān śāriputra āyuṣmantaṃ subhūtim etad avocat – katamenāyuṣman subhūte samādhinā viharan bodhisatvo mahāsatvas tathāgatair arhadbhiḥ samyaksaṃbuddhair vyukriyate ’nuttarāyāṃ samyaksaṃbodhau? śakyaḥ sa samādhir darśayitum? subhūtir āha – no hīdam āyuṣman śāriputra | tatkasya hetoḥ? tam api hi sa kulaputraḥ samādhi na jānāti, na saṃjānīte | āyuṣmān śāriputra āha – na jānāti na saṃjānīte ity āyuṣman subhūte vadasi? āyuṣmān subhūtir āha – na jānāti na saṃjānīte ityāyuṣman śāriputra vadāmi | tatkasya hetor na jānāti na saṃjānīte? avidyamānatvena tasya samādhes taṃ samādhi na jānāti na saṃjānīte | atha khalu bhagavān āyuṣmate subhūtaye sādhukāram adāt – sādhu sādhu subhūte | evam etat subhūte, evam etat | yathāpi nāma tathāgatānubhāvena te pratibhāti, tathāgatādhiṣṭhānenopadiśasi | evaṃ cātra bodhisatvena mahāsatvena śikṣitavyam | tatkasya hetoḥ? evaṃ hi śikṣamāṇe bodhisatvo mahāsatvaḥ prajñāpāramitāyāṃ śikṣate ||

atha khalv āyuṣmān śāriputro bhagavantam etad avocat – evaṃ śikṣamāṇo bhagavan bodhisatvo mahāsatvaḥ prajñāpāramitāyāṃ śikṣate? evam ukte bhagavān āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputram etad avocat – evaṃ śikṣamāṇaḥ śāriputra bodhisatvo mahāsatvaḥ prajñāpāramitāyāṃ śikṣate ||

evam ukte āyuṣmān śāriputro bhagavantam etad avocat – evaṃ śikṣamāṇo bhagavan bodhisatvo mahāsatvaḥ katamasmin dharme śikṣate? evam ukte bhagavān āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputram etad avocat – evaṃ śikṣamāṇaḥ śāriputra bodhisatvo mahāsatvo na katamasmin dharme śikṣate | tatkasya hetoḥ? na hi te śāriputra dharmastathā saṃvidyante yathā bālapṛthagjanā aśrutavanto ’bhiniviṣṭāḥ | āyuṣmān śāriputra āha – kathaṃ tarhi te bhagavan saṃvidyante? bhagavān āha – yathā śāriputra na saṃvidyante, tathā saṃvidyante evam avidyamānāḥ | tenocyante avidyeti | tān bālapṛthagjanā aśrutavanto ’bhiniviṣṭāḥ | tair asaṃvidyamānāḥ sarvadharmāḥ kalpitāḥ | te tān kalpayitvā dvayor antayoḥ saktāḥ tān dharmān jānanti na paśyanti | tasmāt te ’saṃvidyamānān sarvadharmn kalpayanti | kalpayitvā dvāv antāv abhiniviśante | abhiniviśya tan nidānam upalambhaṃ niśritya atītān dharmān kalpayanti, anāgatān dharmān kalpayanti, pratyutpannān dharmān kalpayanti | te kalpayitvā nāmarūpe ’bhiniviṣṭāḥ | tair asaṃvidyamānāḥ sarvadharmāḥ kalpitāḥ | te tān asaṃvidyamānān sarvadharmān kalpayanto yathābhūtaṃ mārgaṃ na jānanti na paśyanti | yathābhūtaṃ mārgam ajānanto ’paśyanto na niryonti traidhātukāt, na budhyante bhūtakoṭim | tena te bālā iti saṃjñāṃ gacchāmi | te satyaṃ dharma na śraddhadhati | na khalu punaḥ śāriputra bodhisatvā mahāsatvā kaṃcid dharmam abhiniviśante ||

evam ukte āyuṣmān śāriputro bhagavantam etad avocat – evaṃ śikṣamāṇo bhagavan bodhisatvo mahāsatvaḥ sarvajñatāyāṃ śikṣate? bhagavān āha – evaṃ śikṣamāṇaḥ śāriputra bodhisatvo mahāsatvaḥ sarvajñatāyām api na śikṣate | evaṃ śikṣamāṇaḥ śāriputra bodhisatvo mahāsatvaḥ sarvadharmeṣu śikṣate | evaṃ śikṣamāṇaḥ śāriputra bodhisatvo mahāsatvaḥ sarvajñatāyāṃ śikṣate, sarvajñatāyā āsannībhavati, sarvajñatāyāṃ niryāsyati ||

atha khalv āyuṣmān subhūtir bhagavantam etad avocat – yo bhagavan evaṃ paripṛcchet – kim ayaṃ māyāpuruṣaḥ sarvajñatāyāṃ śikṣiṣyate, sarvajñatāyā āsannībhaviṣyati, sarvajñatāyāṃ niryāsyatīti? tasya bhagavan evaṃ paripṛcchataḥ kathaṃ nirdeṣṭavyaṃ syāt? evam ukte bhagavān āyuṣmantaṃ subhūtim etad avocat – tena hi subhūte tvām evātra pratiprakṣyāmi | yathā te kṣamate, tathā vyākuryuḥ | sādhu bhagavan nityāyuṣmān subhūtir bhagavataḥ pratyaśrauṣīt | bhagavān etad avocat – tat kiṃ manyase subhūte anyā sā māyā, anyat tad rūpam, anyā sā māyā, anyā sā vedanā | anyā sā saṃjñā, anye te saṃskārāḥ | anyā sā māyā, anyat tad vijñānam? subhūtir āha – na hy etad bhagavan | na hi bhagavan anyā sā māyā anyat tad rūpam | rūpam eva bhagavan māyā, māyaiva rūpam | na hi bhagavan anyā sā māyā anyā sā vedanā, anyā sā saṃjñā anye te saṃskārāḥ | vedanā saṃjñā saṃskārā eva bhagavan māyā, māyaiva vedanāsaṃjñāsaṃskārāḥ | na bhagavan anyā sā māyā anyat tad vijñānam | vijñānam eva bhagavan māyā, māyaiva vijñānam ||

bhagavān āha – tat kiṃ manyase atraiṣā saṃjñā samajñā prajñaptirvyavahāraḥ pañcasūpādānaskandheṣu yad uta bodhisatva iti? evam ukte āyuṣmān subhūtir bhagavantam etad avocat – evam etad bhagavan, evam etat sugata | tena hi bhagavan bodhisatvena mahāsatvena prajñāpāramitāyāṃ śikṣamāṇena māyāpuruṣeṇeva śikṣitavyaṃ bhavaty anuttarāyāṃ samyakasaṃbodhau | tat kasya hetoḥ? sa eva hi bhagavan māyāparuṣo dhārayitavyo yad uta pañcopādāna – skandhāḥ | tat kasya hetoḥ? tathā hi bhagavan māyopamaṃ rūpam uktaṃ bhagavatā | yañ ca rūpaṃ tat ṣaḍindriyaṃ te pañca skandhāḥ | tathā hi bhagavan māyopamā vedanāsaṃjñāsaṃskārā uktāḥ | tathā hi bhagavan māyopamaṃ vijñānam uktaṃ bhagavatā | yañ ca vijñānaṃ tat ṣaḍindriyaṃ te pañca skandhāḥ | mā bhagavan navayānasaṃprasthitā bodhisatvā mahāsatvā imaṃ nirdeśaṃ śrutvā utrasiṣuḥ saṃtrasiṣuḥ saṃtrāsamāpatsyante | bhagavān āha – yadi subhūte navayānasaṃprasthitā bodhisatvā mahāsatvāḥ pāpamitrahastagatā bhaviṣyanti, utrasiṣyanti saṃtrasiṣyanti saṃtrāsam āpatsyante | atha cet subhūte navayānasaṃprasthitā bodhisatvā mahāsatvāḥ kalyāṇamitrahastagatā bhaviṣyanti, notrasiṣyanti na saṃtrasiṣyanti na saṃtrāsam āpatsyante ||

evam ukte āyuṣmān subhūtir bhagavantam etad avocat – mahāyānaṃ mahāyānam iti bhagavann ucyate | sad eva mānuṣāsuraṃ lokam abhibhavan niryosyati ākāśasamatayā atimahat tayā tanmahāyānam | yathā ākāśe aprameyāṇām asaṃkhyeyānāṃ satvānām avakāśaḥ, evam eva bhagavan asmin yāne aprameyāṇām asaṃkhyeyānāṃ satvānām avakāśaḥ, evam eva bhagavan asmin yāne apremayāṇām asaṃkhyeyānāṃ satvānām avakāśaḥ | anena bhagavan paryyeṇa mahāyānam idaṃ bodhisatvānāṃ mahāsatvānām | naivāsyāgamo dṛśyate, naivāsya nirgamo dṛśyate, nāpy asya sthānaṃ saṃvidyate | evam asya bhagavan mahāyānasya naiva pūrvānta upalabhyate, nāpyaparānta upalabhyate, nāpi madhya upalabhyate | atha samaṃ bhagavaṃs tadyānam | tasmān mahāyānaṃ mahāyānam ity ucyate | atha khalu bhagavān āyuṣmate subhūtaye sādhukāram adāt – sādhu sādhu subhūte | evam etat subhūte, evam etat | evaṃ mahāyānam idaṃ bodhisatvānāṃ mahāsatvānām | anna śikṣitvā bodhisatvair mahāsatvaiḥ sarvajñatā anuprāptā, anuprāpsyate anuprāpyate ca ||

atha khalv āyuṣmān śāriputra āyuṣmantaṃ subhūtim etad avocat – tena hi yathāham āyuṣmataḥ subhūter bheṣitasyārtham ājānāmi, tathā bodhisatvo ’py anutpādaḥ | yadi ca āyuṣman subhūte bodhisatvo ’py anutpādaḥ, kiṃ bodhisatvo duṣkaracārikāṃ carati? yāni vā tāni satvānāṃ kṛtaśo duḥkhāny utsahate pratyanubhavitum? evam ukte āyuṣmān subhūtir āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputram etad avocat – nāham āyuṣman śāriputra icchāmi bodhisatvaṃ mahāsatvaṃ duṣkaracārikāṃ carantam | nāpi sa bodhisatvo mahāsatvo yo duṣkarasaṃjñayā carati | tat kasya hetoḥ? na hi āyuṣman śāriputra duṣkarasaṃjñāṃ janayitvā śakyo ’prameyāṇām asaṃkhyeyānāṃ satvānām arthaḥ kartum | api tu sukhasaṃjñāmeva kṛtvā | sarvasatvānāmantike mātṛsaṃjñāṃ pitṛsaṃjñāṃ putrasaṃtrāṃ duhitṛsaṃjñāṃ kṛtvā strīpuruṣeṣu | evam etāḥ saṃjñāḥ kṛtvā bodhisatvo mahāsatvo bodhisatvacārikāṃ carati | tasmān mātṛsaṃjñā pitṛsaṃjñā putrasaṃjñā duhitṛsaṃjñā bodhisatvena mahāsatvena sarvasatvānām antike yāvad ātmasaṃjñā utpādayitavyā | yathā ātmā sarveṇa sarvaṃ sarvathā sarvaṃ sarvaduḥkhebhyo mocayitavyaḥ, evaṃ sarvasatvāḥ sarveṇa sarvaṃ sarvathā sarvaṃ sarvaduḥkhebhyo mocayitavyā iti | evaṃ ca sarvasatveṣu saṃjñā utpādayitavyā – mayaite sarvasatvā na parityaktavyāḥ | mayaite sarvasatvāḥ parimocayitavyā aparimāṇato duḥkhaskandhāt | na ca mayaiteṣu cittapradoṣa utpādayitavyaḥ, antaśaḥ śataśo ’pi chidyamāneneti | evaṃ hi bodhisatvena mahāsatvena cittam utpādayitavyam | saced evaṃ citto vihariṣyati | punar aparam āyuṣman śāriputra bodhisatvena evaṃ cittam utpādayitavyam – yathā sarveṇa sarvaṃ sarvathā sarvam ātmā na vidyate nopalabhyate, evaṃ sarveṇa sarvaṃ sarvathā sarvaṃ sarvadharmā na saṃvidyante nopalabhyante | evam ādhyātmikabāhyeṣu sarvadharmeṣu saṃjñā utpādayitavyā | saced evaṃ cittaś cariṣyati, na duṣkarasaṃjñī cariṣyati, na duṣkarasaṃjñī vihariṣyati | yad apy āyuṣman śāriputra evam āha – anutpādo bodhisatva iti | evam etad āyuṣman śāriputra, evam etat | anutpādo bodhisatva iti ||

śāriputra āha – kiṃ punar āyuṣman subhūte bodhisatva evānutpādaḥ, utāho bodhisatvadharmo apy anutpādaḥ? subhūtir āha – bodhisatvadharmo api āyuṣmān śāriputra anutpādaḥ | śāriputra āha – kiṃ punar āyuṣman subhūte sarvajñataivānutpādaḥ, utāho sarvajñatādharmā apy anutpādaḥ? āha – sarvajñatādharmā apy āyuṣman śāriputra anutpādaḥ | āha – kiṃ punar āyuṣman subhūte sarvajñatādharmā evānutpādaḥ, utāho pṛthagjano ’py anutpādaḥ? āha – pṛthagjano ’py āyuṣman śāriputra anutpādaḥ | āha – kiṃ punar āyuṣman subhūte pṛthagjana evānutpādaḥ, utāho pṛthagjanadharmā apy anutpādaḥ? āha – pṛthagjanadharmā apy āyuṣman śāriputra anutpādaḥ | evam ukte āyuṣmān śāriputra āyuṣmantaṃ subhūtim etad avocat – yady āyuṣman subhūte bodhisatvo ’py anutpādaḥ, bodhisatvadharmo apy anutpādaḥ, sarvajñatāpyanutpādaḥ, sarvajñatādharmā apy anutpādaḥ, pṛthagjano ’py anutpādaḥ, pṛthagjanadharmā apy anutpādaḥ, nanv āyuṣman subhūte anuprāptaiva ayatnena bodhisatvena mahāsatvena sarvajñatā bhavati | evam ukte āyuṣmān subhūtir āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputram etad avocat – nāham āyuṣman śāriputra anutpannasya dharmasya prāptim icchāmi, nāpy abhisamayam | nāpy anutpannena dharmeṇa anutpannā prāptiḥ prāpyate | āha – kiṃ punar āyuṣman subhūte anutpannena dharmeṇa anutpannā prāptiḥ prāpyate, utāho utpannena dharmeṇa anutpannā prāptiḥ prāpyate? āha – kiṃ punar āyuṣman śāriputra anutpanno dharma utpannaḥ, utāho anutpanna eva dharmo ’nutpannaḥ? āha – kiṃ punar āyuṣman subhūte utpāda eva dharmo ’nutpādaḥ, utāho anutpādo dharma utpādaḥ? āha – utpādo dharmo ’nutpādo dharma ity āyuṣman śāriputra na pratibhāti jallpatum | āha – anutpādo ’pi te āyuṣman subhūte pratibhāti jallpatum | āha – anutpāda evāyuṣman śāriputra jalpaḥ pratibhāti | anutpāda eva āyuṣman śāriputra pratibhānam | evam evāyuṣman śāriputra atyantaṃ pratibhāti ||

evam ukte āyuṣmān śāriputra āyuṣmantaṃ subhūtim etad avocat – dhārmakathikānām āyuṣmān subhūtir agratāyāṃ sthāpitavyaḥ | tat kasya hetoḥ? tathā hy āyuṣmān subhūtiḥ sthaviro yato yata eva paripraśnīkriyate, tatastata eva niḥsarati, dharmatāyāś ca na calati, tāṃ ca dharmatāṃ na virodhayati | evam ukte āyuṣmān subhūtir āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputram etad avocat – dharmataiṣā āyuṣman śāriputra bhagavataḥ śrāvakāṇām aniśritadharmāṇām | te yato yata eva paripraśnīkriyante, tatastata eva niḥsaranti, dharmatāṃ ca na virodhayanti, dharmatāyāśca na vyativartante | tat kasya hetoḥ? yathāpi nāma aniśritatvātsarvadharmāṇām | evam ukte āyuṣmān śāriputra āyuṣmantaṃ subhūtim etad avocat – sādhu sādhu āyuṣman subhūte | katamaiṣā sarvadharmāniśritapāramitā bodhisatvānāṃ mahāsatvānām? subhūtirāha – prajñāpāramitaiva āyuṣman śāriputra sārvayānikī, sarvadharmīniśritatayā sarvadharmāniśritapāramitā ca | iti hi yasya bodhisatvasya mahāsatvasya evaṃ gambhīrāyāṃ prajñāpāramitāyāṃ bhāṣyamāṇāyām evaṃ deśyamānāyām evam upadiśyamānāyāṃ na bhavati cittasya avalīnatvam, na bhavati kāṅkṣaṃāyitatvam, na bhavati dhandhāyitatvam, na bhavati cittasyānyathātvam, veditavyamayaṃ bodhisatvo mahāsatvo viharatyanena prajñāpāramitāvihāreṇa avirahitaś cānena manasikāreṇeti ||

atha khalv āyuṣmān śāriputra āyuṣmantaṃ subhūtim etad avocat – katham āyuṣman subhūte avirahito bodhisatvo mahāsatvo ’vihito manasikāreṇa bhavati, yaḥ prajñāpāramitāvihāreṇa viharati? yadi hy āyuṣman subhūte bodhisatvo mahāsatvo ’virahito manasikāreṇa bhavati, evaṃ sa virahitaḥ prajñāpāramitāvihāreṇa bhavati | yadi ca āyuṣman subhūte avirahito bodhisatvo mahāsatvaḥ prajñāpāramitāvihāreṇa bhavati, evaṃ sa virahito manasikāreṇa bhavati | yadi ca āyuṣman subhūte manasikāreṇāvirahito bodhisatvo mahāsatvaḥ, avirahita evaṃ prajñāpāramitāvihāreṇa bhavati | evaṃ sati sarvasatvā apy avirahitā bhaviṣyanti prajñāpāramitāvihāreṇa | tat kasya hetoḥ? sarvasatvā api hy avirahitā manasikāreṇa viharanti ||

evam ukte āyuṣmān subhūtir āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputram etad avocat – sādhu sādhu āyuṣman śāriputra | api tu upālapsye tvā | atha eva tv āyuṣmatā śāriputreṇa bhūtapadābhidhānena parigṛhītaḥ | tat kasya hetoḥ? satvāsvabhāvatayā āyuṣmān śāriputra manasikārāsvabhāvatā veditavyā | satvāsadbhāvatayā āyuṣman śāriputra manasikārā – sadbhāvā veditavyā | satvaviviktatā āyuṣman śāriputra manasikāraviviktatā veditavyā | satvācintyatayā āyuṣman śāriputra manasikārācintyatā veditavyā | satvānabhisaṃbodhanatayā āyuṣman śāriputra manasikārābhisaṃbodhanatā veditavyā | satvāyathābhūtārthābhisaṃbodhanatayā āyuṣman śāriputra manasikārāyathābhūtārthābhisaṃbodhanatā veditavyā | anena āyuṣman śāriputra evaṃ rūpeṇa manasikāreṇa icchāmi bodhisatvaṃ mahāsatvaṃ viharantamanena vihāreṇeti ||

 

āryāṣṭasāhasrikāyāṃ prajñāpāramitāyāṃ sarvākārajñatācaryāparivarto nāma prathamaḥ ||
