A few vas-forms, occurring in RV. in questionable connection, are referred in BR. to a root √ 4 vas “aim”. The causative forms ascribed by BR. to a root √ 5 vas “cut off” are also doubtless peculiar technical specializations from √ 3 vas.

 

Meanings

vásati vásate v PPP uṣita4 q.v. (& uṣṭa) stay in a place, esp. over night (rātrim), dwell, live, rest on (eye) or in (L); w. dūratas keep away; w. sukham be at ease or comfortable. Caus. vāsáyati, te cause to stay (over night), lodge; confine in (L), stop, detain, keep, support.

 

adhi settle upon, occupy, inhabit.

anu remove to a place after another person (A); dwell, inhabit; pass, spend (time).

ā settle or enter upon (A), dwell or live in (L); cohabit with (A); w. gurostalpam commit adultery with the teacher's wife. Caus. harbour, lodge; take up one's abode in (A); stop, stay, esp. over night. adhyā choose as abode, inhabit (A), dwell or live in (L) enter upon, attend to (A). samā stop, stay (esp. over night); settle in, inhabit (A). Caus. make a halt, settle down.

ud Caus. remove from its place (esp. the fire from the altar agnim), sever, cut off (a head), root out (trees), ravage, lay waste.

upa abide, stay, wait, esp. with eating i.e. fast; enter upon, attend to (A). Caus. cause to stay (over night) or fast.

ni dwell (of men & beasts), live in (L), inhabit, occupy, keep; incur, undergo; have sexual intercourse with (A). Caus. cause to stay, receive in one's house, lodge; make inhabitable, populate; inhabit. saṃni live with (I) in (L).

nis finish (w. vāsam); Caus. expel from home, banish, send away, dismiss.

pari stay (over night), live with (I); Caus. keep over night.

pra set out, go abroad (for a night); depart, disappear, be gone; stay or dwell in (L); also = Caus. banish, exile. vipra go or be abroad. Caus. banish, remove.

prati (stay over night*); have one's dwelling.

vi change one's abode, go away from (Ab); pass, spend (time) Caus. drive away (from home or land), banish, exile, dismiss.

sam dwell together, live with (I saha or A), cohabit with (A); stay or live in (L); pass, spend (A of time). Caus. cause to live together, bring together with (I saha), give shelter, harbour.
