Is most probably an old denominative of rā́j “ruler”, from √ ṛj, raj, which see. The anomalous stem irajyá- (see ib.) is related with it.

rā́jati rā́jate rā́ṣṭi 1 v reign, rule, direct, be master of (G); shine, glitter, be illustrious or eminent, distinguish one's self, appear as (iva). Caus. rājayati, te rule, govern.
